Yellow balau is a dense, durable hardwood from Southeast Asia that's often used for outdoor projects. It's also known as Selengan Batu or Bangkirai.
Properties
-
Appearance: Straw color, with heartwood that's yellow to brown and paler sapwood
-
Uses: Decks, sleepers, wharfage, ship building, heavy construction, flooring, poles, boxes, crates, and more
-
Resistance: Resistant to wear, weather, termites, water, and rot
-
Toxicity: Contains toxins that limit insects eating it
-
Workability: High-density hardwood that's relatively easy to work, but can be susceptible to cracking or warping
Treatment
-
Balau timber can be treated and seasoned to a reddish-brown to purple-brown color
-
The treatment process can be extensive and difficult to dry evenly
-
Balau is susceptible to pinhole borer damage
When working with yellow balau, it's recommended to pre-drill or bolt holes instead of nailing or drilling.
