Yellow balau is a dense, durable hardwood from Southeast Asia that's often used for outdoor projects. It's also known as Selengan Batu or Bangkirai.

Properties

  • Appearance: Straw color, with heartwood that's yellow to brown and paler sapwood
  • Uses: Decks, sleepers, wharfage, ship building, heavy construction, flooring, poles, boxes, crates, and more
  • Resistance: Resistant to wear, weather, termites, water, and rot
  • Toxicity: Contains toxins that limit insects eating it
  • Workability: High-density hardwood that's relatively easy to work, but can be susceptible to cracking or warping

Treatment

  • Balau timber can be treated and seasoned to a reddish-brown to purple-brown color
  • The treatment process can be extensive and difficult to dry evenly
  • Balau is susceptible to pinhole borer damage

When working with yellow balau, it's recommended to pre-drill or bolt holes instead of nailing or drilling.
